Les Médiévales de Touques - Chapitre VIII

Présentation

“The Normans towards the Conquest of Europe” Listen! Listen! This year, the city will make you discover the great Norman epopee of the 11th century: the conquest of the south of Italy and of the Principality of Antioch. The Normans have known, during the 11th and the 12th centuries, a phase of remarkable expansion throughout Europe. While William the Conqueror was conquering England, the Norman riders were exploring Spain, Minor Asia and Italy. After having subjugated Italy and taken Sicily back from the Arabs, these riders managed to fund the Kingdom of Sicily. This success was not just military. The warriors of Guillaume and the other Norman riders were able to face the conflicts they originated, and subjugated the indigenous populations. But they were also remarkable administrators and clever politicians, easily adjusting to foreign cultures and making conquered populations participate to their domination project. In Mont Saint-Michel, Bayeux, Rouen, England and Southern Italy, their architectural and artistic creations are great proofs of the open-mindedness of the Normans, which harmoniously integrated to their works some elements belonging to the indigenous culture.
